Override values reported on an employee's W-2.
An Employee Tax Statement Override sets values that Check reports on an employee's tax statement (Form W-2) for one tax year. Overrides are available for tax year 2026 and later, and cover:
- Qualified overtime compensation — reported in Box 12 with Code TT. When set, it replaces the amount Check computes from the employee's overtime earnings.
- Other lines — reported in Box 14a. A line replaces a line Check generates with the same label; otherwise it's added.
Each employee has at most one override per year. Creating or updating overrides is keyed by employee and year, so sending an override for an employee and year that already has one replaces its values.
Overrides apply to tax statements generated after they're saved. Each change is kept in the override's history, so a generated statement can be traced back to the exact values it used.
Webhooks
Check sends webhooks for override lifecycle events with the employee_tax_statement_override topic. The payload's data is the employee tax statement override object.
| Event | Description |
|---|---|
| created | An employee tax statement override was created |
| updated | An employee tax statement override was updated |
| deleted | An employee tax statement override was deleted |
Creating or updating overrides sends an updated webhook for every existing override it saves, even if no values changed. Updating an override sends one only when a value changes.
